I’m passionate about finding ways to manage the countryside so it benefits both wildlife and people.
For my top up year I’m researching the effect of neonicotinoids on bees and whether there are alternative, less harmful ways of managing crop pests. I’m collecting crop yield data from arable farmers and I’m hoping to show that natural methods are as effective as insecticides while being less harmful to wildlife.
I think a degree proves to employers that you have an in depth knowledge of your subject and that you’re serious about your career. Understanding the latest technology is also important. Soil and water testing kits are developing and phone linked technology is useful in the field. Our modules cover all of these skills.
One of the big advantages of studying at University Centre Reaseheath is that our lecturers are very knowledgeable and have a lot of industry links and contacts which they’re happy to share. They support you but encourage independent learning and point you to in depth study and research.
I’m hoping to become a park ranger or environmental consultant. I did a work placement at Tatton Park while I was studying for my Level 3 Extended Diploma at Reaseheath and I’ve continued to volunteer regularly with the rangers there during weekends and holidays. I’ve now been offered a job as an Estate Presentation Assistant with the ranger team so I’m on my way to achieving my goal!
