Foundation Degree in Agriculture with Dairy Herd Management
Mary’s family have farmed in Cheshire for eight generations so it isn’t surprising that she’s decided to carry on the tradition.
Working in partnership with her father Hugh, she is the first woman to oversee the day to day running of Golbourne Farm, a 250 acre dairy farm with a high yielding herd of Holstein cows.
The farm supplies liquid milk directly to the Co-op and is part of the Co-op’s Farming Pioneers Programme, which supports British farming.
Committing to the farm wasn’t an instant decision for Mary. She achieved a geography degree from the University of Sheffield and a Masters Degree in Rural Estate and Land Management from Harper Adams University, followed by a job as a land agent with Strutt and Parker.
But working with farmers rekindled her passion and she decided to study part-time for a degree in agriculture so she could really make a difference to the family business. She found that our degree delivered not only the theory behind good practice but also finance and business skills which gave her the confidence to progress and change.

This degree covers so many interesting topics. But it’s the extra experiences which make it special – the visits to farms and businesses, the range of speakers and the people you meet. Also the classes are quite small and that encourages discussion.
