Our Animal Science undergraduates have been studying great crested newts this year, to better understand their population status.
Our students have been working alongside licensed staff to study the great crested newts which live on campus, deploying a range of traps whilst also completing torchlight surveys and egg searches.
We used capture-mark-recapture techniques to identify each individual newt, to help better understand their population status, and to inform future management of both the immediate habitat and wider campus.
Great crested newts are a species of conservation concern in the UK and are therefore a European Protected Species. Because of this, they are afforded high levels of legal protection across their range, primarily due to significant pressures placed on their habitat.
