Laura Moulding
Foundation Degree in Dairy Technology (Eden programme)
I decided to do my degree so I could progress both my family’s business and my own career.
We’re an independent dairy in Lancashire specialising in yoghurt and cultured products. I joined the business seven years ago after leaving college and I work in a team headed by my mum. We use milk from my uncle’s dairy herd.
The dairy industry is quite fast paced and I was conscious that we needed to keep abreast of technological advancements, which is why I joined the Eden programme. It’s ideal because it’s aimed specifically at growing the skills of people who work in the dairy industry.
I was interested in learning about the latest technology and machinery and how this could help us meet the demand for our own products. Thanks to my degree I’ve progressed into my current role and doubled the size of dairy by adding an automated fermentation unit and new packing machines. By becoming more automated we’ve increased output and I’m also able to carry out British Retail Consortium audits and product development.
My degree taught me not only how machinery works, but what effect it has on the product and what you have to do to get the product you want. Also, on a personal level, I’m now much more confident at managing the staff on my team.
Reaseheath’s technical staff were very supportive and advised us on which machinery we should install. They have continued to support me on my journey even after I completed my Eden programme and are an absolute credit to the college. I and Little Town Dairy wouldn’t be where we are without them!
The company is constantly growing and, despite Covid-19 affecting sales, the future is looking very bright for us.
