Our Public Services course focuses on preparing you for work in this sector, through key industry links, first-class facilities and hands-on experience.
Gain an insight into the industry
You will gain unique insight into the work of the public services with live research projects and through our links with the Army, the Royal Navy, Cheshire Police and Cheshire Fire and Rescue. You’ll gain advice from visiting representatives of local emergency services, allowing you to make good decisions on your future career.
You’ll enjoy memorable visits to specialised facilities where you’ll gain hands-on experience alongside trainers from our local fire and rescue and police forces. You’ll also develop skills and professional expertise through tours of relevant attractions such as Safety Central, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service’s interactive education centre.
From a police perspective, delivering presentations at Reaseheath is an incredibly valuable opportunity to engage with young people, helping install positive messages and enabling them to make healthy life decisions.
Many of our graduates progress into the Police, the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force, the Royal Marines and in the prison service, for example as a probation officer, after studying with us.
Build key employability skills
With input from our expert team of lecturers, you will develop your communication, leadership and teamworking skills and gain in depth understanding of our legal systems and how legislation is applied to global situations.
This is a diverse sector and you will broaden your understanding of areas such as serious and organised crime, aviation, youth offending and rehabilitation, forensic psychology and international terrorism.
You will also research and gain a deeper understanding about current issues which impact on public services such as changes to government policy, defence cuts and changes in social behaviour.
Gain experience on trips, courses and visits
You will develop essential experience and build employability skills with trips and residential courses while talks and demonstrations from visiting professionals, including custom and excise officers, police dog handlers and prison officers, will keep you thoroughly informed about your options for career progression.
After completing your course, you may even decide to move on to a level 6 course at another university to top-up your qualification.
Choose from a variety of careers
Some of the career options available in this sector include:
Tom Reynolds
BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Public Services 2020
I’ve always wanted to be a police officer, helping to keep the community safe. I’d be following in the footsteps of my grandad, who was an inspector with Merseyside Police.
Once I’ve finished here I’m considering studying criminology or applying to become a special constable. I feel well prepared to do either. This course has increased my confidence and interpersonal skills, thanks to the activities I’ve done and the people I’ve met, while the academic side requires discipline to meet the required levels and deadlines. It’s critical you have good research skills.
Apart from the course, the best thing about being a Reaseheath undergraduate is that everyone respects each other whatever they’re studying.
